Why This Angered the Colonists
After the French and Indian War, England had a debt of about 100,000,000 euros. It had no money to pay for it and did not want to tax its own people. Therefore they decided to...
Tax the Colonists by passing acts like
Stamp Act
The Townshend Acts
Tea Act
This angered the colonists for they hadno representation in Parliament. Therefore, they considered it unfair to be taxed for no reason (the British had not told them that they were taxing them to be able to pay for the French and Indian War).
England also had many hostile neighbors. The Native Americans were not happy for their land was being taken away even though they had fought and died for the British. There were about 50,000-80,000, unhappy French men and women, still sore from losing the war in New France (Canada). They also had to worry about the Spanishdown in Florida.
Parliament decides to pass the Proclamation Line of 1763. This ordered the colonists to not cross theAppalachian Mountains; that land all the way to theMississippi River was Indian Territory. It gave theFrench their own providence in Quebec and gave theSpanish their own Providence in Florida. It also employed soldiers to watch boundaries.
This made the American Colonists mad because the colonies were getting crowded and people wanted to move west.
To watch boundaries and "protect" the American colonists, the British sent soldiers to America. However, they had no place to house them. They decided to pass...
The Quartering Act.
This created another problem, though. The Americans did not like the British soldiers and much less wanted to house and feed them. Tension between the Americans and the soldiers led to the Boston Massacre
Because the Americans mostly traded they had very little actual money. They also had to pay their taxes to England in actual money. They decided to print out paper money, rapidly; it had no value and pretty soon each colony had its own currency, but no exchange rate.
England passed the Currency Act, making all of their money worthless.
This made the American colonists mad because Britain both refused to trade for money and required them to pay unfair taxes with British money, which they had precious little of.
